Search resumes for man who disappeared while swimming in Hackensack River

The search for a 39-year-old man who went missing Sunday while attempting to swim across the Hackensack River is set to resume Tuesday, police said.

The man, a Hackensack resident whose name has not been released, disappeared below the water around 3 p.m. after jumping into the river near the Costco store on South River Street in Hackensack, police said.

He was swimming toward Bogota when he began to struggle, police said.

Two of his friends, who had urged the man not to enter the river, searched the area for an hour without finding him, police said.

He was later reported missing to police and authorities searched the river Sunday and Monday with boats and a helicopter. The search was scheduled to resume on Tuesday.
