Before three bodies were found inside Stewart Weldon’s home in Springfield, Mass., before he was arrested and charged with kidnapping and raping a Massachusetts woman, before he made international headlines, Weldon lived in Montclair — where at 19 years old he was already amassing a criminal record.
Weldon, now 40, spent his younger years charged with weapons offenses, burglary and sexual assault in New Jersey between 1997 and 2006, court records and news reports show. The outcome of most of the cases are unclear but Weldon was sentenced to at least 367 days in jail in 2006, according to court records.
Dwight Pottinger, who knew Weldon in Montclair, described Weldon as a “ladies man” and said the two of them used to go out together.
“We were young, drinking, smoking,” he told NJ Advance Media. When asked if he was surprised three bodies were found where Weldon lived, he responded: “Not really.”

Weldon was previously arrested in Montclair and charged with sexual assault in 1997, court records show.
He and Pottinger were accused of picking up an 18-year-old Bloomfield woman who they met at the Lackawanna Plaza shopping center in Montclair and refusing to let her leave the car, according to reports in The Star-Ledger at the time.
Weldon was 19 at the time. He and Pottinger allegedly picked up the Bloomfield woman after a party, drove her to Montclair and sexually assaulted her, according to the newspaper.
The outcome of the case is unclear.
Weldon continued to have run-ins with the law that same year.
In 1997, he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon in East Orange and was sentenced to three years of probation. He was also charged with kidnapping in East Orange but the result of the charge is unclear.
Weldon also got into legal trouble in Bergen County. He pleaded guilty to a burglary charge in Maywood Borough and was sentenced in 2006 to 367 days in jail, court records show.
