N.J. school bus accident: Watch the emotional news conference after deadly crash

Gov. Phil Murphy stood with local officials Thursday to announce a student and a teacher from a Paramus school were killed in a horrific school bus crash involving a dump truck.

The bus was traveling from East Brook Middle School on a field trip to Waterloo Village when the wreck occurred around 10:20 a.m. on Route 80 in Mount Olive.

Officials said the bus was carrying 38 students and seven adults. Forty-three of them were taking to area hospitals, including some in critical condition.

“This is a shaken community,” Murphy said. “Everyone is trying to make sense of this.”

“Sixty-five years I lived in this town and it’s difficult to stand here and talk about our education community suffering so deeply,” said Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco, a former borough mayor and fire chief.
