Longshoreman gets 3 years for drunken driving death at port terminal

A 50-year-old longshoreman who fatally struck a coworker at the Elizabeth marine terminal with a top loader has been sentenced to three years in prison for second-degree manslaughter, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.

Victor M. Belo, of North Arlington, had previously pleaded guilty before state Superior Court Judge Robert Kirsch, who imposed the sentence, Acting County Prosecutor Ann M. Luvera said in a statement.

Authorities said investigators determined Belo had a blood-alcohol concentration of more than .08 percent when he struck and killed Judy Jones, a 49-year-old Newark resident, on Aug. 7, 2015.
