Death of officer's wife ruled a suicide, authorities say

The death last year of the wife of a then-suspended Mercer County sheriff’s officer has officially been ruled a suicide, Chesterfield police said Monday.

Regina Schoellkopf was found hanging in her home in on July 2, 2017.

Her husband, Scott Schoellkopf, a Mercer sheriff’s lieutenant, was suspended following his April arrest on an assault charge following an incident at their home.

Before the medical examiner could do their post-mortem examination, though, Regina Schoellkopf’s family requested they do their own independent examination, which Burlington County officials granted.
