Glimpse of History: A break from icebreaking on the canal

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP — Workers ham it up for the camera while harvesting ice from the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Franklin Township in this turn-of-the-century photo.

Information from the Franklin Township Public Library tells us that in the pre-refrigeration days of harvesting ice, the canal was preferred as a source because its calm waters froze deeper, making for thicker ice.
