Scientist's accidental exhale leads to improved DNA detector

Researchers at the Universities of Rochester and Ottawa have developed a novel nanoscale device for detecting DNA biomarkers. The device, described in Nano Letters, preconfines translocating molecules using an ultrathin nanoporous silicon nitride membrane separated from a single sensing nanopore by a nanoscale cavity. The membrane serves as a pre-filter and improves the DNA sensing capabilities of the nanopore in multiple ways.
