County plans beefed up patrols to catch impaired drivers

State-funded police patrols targeting drunk and drugged drivers will begin this Friday in Gloucester County and continue through the end of the year.

Sixteen Gloucester County police departments will share $45,000 in highway traffic safety funds to pay for extra patrols.

Impaired driving jumps nearly 10 percent during the holiday season, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.

In 2016, 20 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey were alcohol-related. Nationally, the death toll from drunk driving exceeds 10,000 annually.
