NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J. — Kisha Theodore had just arrived at work when she saw three missed calls on her phone from an unfamiliar number. A friend was calling from the hospital to say the father of Ms. Theodore’s three children had died.
“This can’t be real,” she remembered thinking. “How to explain this to my children I really didn’t know.” A month later, the man’s parents asked her to move out of their home.
