Meet the paddleboarder who got this close to a humpback whale on the Jersey Shore

Brian Shea set out to spot a humpback whale, but wasn’t expecting one to surface about two feet from his stand-up paddleboard.

Yet that’s exactly what happened when Shea ventured about a half-mile out into the Atlantic Ocean, off Long Branch, on Saturday, Nov. 11.

“If I got much closer, he’d be sharing the board with me,” Shea, 41, of Long Branch, said in recounting his unforgettable encounter with a 30-to-40 foot whale.
