Hotel worker fired after complaining about unequal pay gets $35K settlement

A former employee at a Bergen County Hilton hotel who was fired after complaining that men who did the same work as her were paid more will receive $35,000, according to a civil rights settlement announced Tuesday.

Rosa E. Lopez was hired in August 2011 as a housekeeper at Hilton Homewood Suites in Edgewater for an hourly wage of $8 an hour, the state attorney general’s office said.

A short time later the hotel hired six men — including Lopez’s son — to do the same job for $9-10 an hour, attorney general said.
