Democrats pick Coughlin as next N.J. Assembly speaker

TRENTONCraig Coughlin, a little-known Middlesex County lawmaker, was chosen by his fellow Democrats Monday to become the next speaker of the state Assembly, replacing two-term incumbent Vincent Prieto.

That will make Coughlin the third-most powerful elected official in the Garden State, allowing him to help set its legislative agenda by deciding which bills get put up for a vote. Only the governor and state Senate president hold more power.
