Killer who dismembered teen neighbor can now get out of jail 11 years earlier

MORRISTOWN — James Zarate, who was sentenced to life for killing and dismembering a 16-year-old girl with his brother, had his sentence reduced to 50 years in prison, the Daily Record reported.

The resentencing of Zarate, now 27, by Judge Salem Ahto followed a January state Supreme Court ruling that lengthy terms that are tantamount to life in prison should not be imposed on people who were juveniles at the time they committed murder, the newspaper reported.
