HILLSIDE — Two mayoral candidates will face each other in a runoff election next month after an energetic campaign season resulted in none of four candidates getting more than half of the total vote.
Six council candidates, meanwhile, will also participate in the Dec. 5 runoff for three open at-large council seats.
The wide-open race between the mayoral candidates will give way to the runoff between top vote getters Dahlia Vertreese, the president of Hillside’s school board, and Jorge A. Batista, a former councilman. Hillside’s current mayor, Angela Garretson, won a Union County freeholder seat Tuesday.
