Jersey City gets big win in contract dispute with cops

JERSEY CITY — A state arbitrator has handed Jersey City a major victory in its contract dispute with the local police officers union, giving the city largely everything it asked for and making what the union calls “unprecedented” changes to its contract with the city.

The changes are both financial – officers eligible for raises next year and in 2020 will not get them, for example – as well as administrative, with the arbitrator ordering adjustments to work rules that the city says will increase public safety and make the department easier to manage.
