Hunters kill 123 bears so far, add guns to their arsenal

FREDON — N.J.’s struggling bear hunt may get a boost today when hunters add muzzleloader rifles to their arsenal.

Only bows and arrows were allowed in the first three days, during which 123 bears were killed — one-third of the total at this point last year.

Another 41 were brought to the state’s five check stations by 9 p.m. Wednesday, following 56 on Tuesday and 26 on Monday, the state Department of Environmental Protection said.

By comparison, 368 bears were killed in the first three days last year, in which hunters similarly were limited to archery.
