Retired cop says department retaliated over medical issue

VINELAND — A retired Vineland police officer claims in a federal lawsuit that department officials retaliated against him when he accused his superiors of violating his rights.

Joseph Valentine, who joined the department in 1982, took a military leave of absence in 2012 to serve in the New Jersey Air National Guard, where he holds a rank of senior master sergeant.

He was still on that leave from the department but not on duty with the Air National Guard when he had an “emergency medical issue that resulted from the voluntary consumption of alcohol” in September 2016, according to his lawsuit.
