Good Samaritan who helped in ocean rescue getting some help with medical bills

BELMAR – A friend of an off-duty lifeguard who is facing steep medical bills after a heroic rescue effort in Belmar last month has started a gofundme page to help out with the costs.

Kristian Falkenstein, 39, of Newtown, Pennsylvania, was playing beach volleyball on Fourth Avenue beach in Belmar on Sept. 23 when a swimmer became distressed after he got caught in a rip current.

Falkenstein, a trained lifeguard, charged into the rough surf and was the first person to make contact with the swimmer.
