WARREN — Last month, Angelo L. Tomaso School first-grade teacher Mary Balkonis and her students noticed caterpillars dining on milkweed in the school’s outdoor classroom during recess. Worried that birds would get the caterpillars, the students corralled 10 of them into a netted enclosure along with a supply of fresh milkweed leaves.
