Show 'em or fold 'em time for Salem hospital | Editorial

The Memorial Hospital of Salem County needs a lifeline to stay afloat. A foundation has a $50-million-plus lifeline, although it’s uncertain that anyone will be there to grab it.

In a nutshell, that’s what faces the money-losing Mannington Township hospital, owned by Community Health Systems, a for-profit operator that desperately wants to take the facility off its books. The company seems prepared to shut the doors if it can’t sell the place. A potential deal to do just that fell through in May.
