According to a 2007 article in Weird NJ, environmental concessions were made to facilitate completion of the highway. One concession was to build “extra land bridges to allow animals to easily migrate to and from the Watchung Reservation without getting killed by interstate traffic.”

Construction on the stretch started in 1974 and was completed in 1986.
