Ex-inmate gets $150K settlement after alleging 'savage' jailhouse beating

NEWTON — A former Sussex County jail inmate who alleged he was assaulted by three other inmates in an attack arranged by a corrections officer whose house he burglarized will receive a $150,000 settlement from the county.

Robert Woodruff filed a lawsuit in 2015 against the county and various officials two years after he claims he was subjected to a “savage beating” in a jail cell that had been purposely left open.

Woodruff, of Vernon, accused jail officials of leaving him bloodied and beaten for 12 hours in the cell before he received medical attention.
