Cousins to get $575K settlement for ex-judge's 'perversion of justice'

LINDEN — The city has agreed to pay $575,000 to two Elizabeth men who say a former Linden municipal judge illegally deprived them of a public defender and forced them to spend about 60 more days in jail than was legally allowed.

The settlement, first reported on the N.J. Civil Settlements blog, resolved a lawsuit by Wendell and Anthony Kirkland claiming Judge Louis M.J. DiLeo “transformed the role of the Linden Court from a neutral and detached magistrate to a judge, jury and executioner.”
