Health fund holding $35M 'hostage,' could cause hospital to close, lawmakers say

MANNINGTON TWP. — Officials Tuesday called on leaders of a foundation to “do the right thing” and turn over $50-plus million to help pay for the purchase and upgrades to the ailing Memorial Hospital of Salem County.

“I really, truly think this is our last chance,” said state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-3rd Dist. of the hospital’s potential for survival. “There’s a real shot that this hospital could close.”

Sweeney said freeing up the money, held by the Community Foundation of New Jersey and the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation, is critical to facilitate the sale of the hospital …read more
