Jersey Shore cop wades into ocean to save distraught man

AVALON — An Avalon police officer waded into the ocean up to his chest early Sunday to rescue a man threatening to harm himself, authorities said.

Patrolman Mark Glassford went into the ocean after he and his partner encountered a distraught man along the 16th Avenue beach around 2:30 a.m., Avalon police said in a statement.

When the officers approached, the man yelled at Glassford an officer Matthew Ardelean ordering them to leave him alone.
