Repeat DWI offender involved in hit and run shortly before fatal wreck, officials say

WOODBURY — Cathleen LaBance’s Toyota Solara wasn’t the only car Robert J. Gardner crashed into the night of Sept. 6, authorities said.

Less than an hour before Gardner’s pickup truck crossed over a grass median and struck LaBance’s car —  killing the 31-year-old mother of two —  he had allegedly rammed into another vehicle on Route 42 and took off at speeds nearing 80 to 100 mph, according to Assistant Prosecutor Dianna Rolando. 

That’s when police received their first 911 call of the night, Rolando said Tuesday morning during a pretrial detention hearing for Gardner.
