Elderly man pulled from D&R Canal after scooter accident

FRANKLIN TWP. – A trio of township employees, with the help of a passerby, rescued a 71-year-old man clinging to a tree branch in chest deep water after a scooter accident on Tuesday, police said.

Police got a 9-1-1 call at 11:30 a.m. from the man’s friend, saying the Scotch Plains resident had attempted to do a “K” turn on a path next to the D&R Canal about three-quarters of a mile south of the Blackwell’s Mills Causeway.
