Veteran officer alleges discrimination in police department lawsuit

FRANKLIN TWP. – A 22-year veteran of the township’s police department has filed a discrimination lawsuit claiming non-Caucasians are routinely passed over for jobs and promotions.

The lawsuit, filed by Sgt. Dennis Hopson in Middlesex County Superior Court, alleges that over the last two decades the department has hired mostly Caucasians. When the department has hired African-Americans or “other minority officers,” they were given a badge number junior to Caucasian officers, according to the lawsuit.
