Woman, 80, struck by mail truck outside her home, police say

MANCHESTER — An 80-year-old woman was hospitalized Friday after she was struck by a mail truck, police said.

The woman was retrieving her mail at her box on Ardmore Street around 4:23 p.m. when a U.S. Postal Service truck “unexpectedly” backed up and hit her, Manchester police Capt. Todd Malland said.

The impact caused her to fall down to the ground, Malland said. She suffered injuries to her leg and head and was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment.
