Veteran Atlantic City state lawmaker dies suddenly

TRENTON — State Sen. Jim Whelan, a former Atlantic City mayor who became  a respected and influential figure in the New Jersey Legislature, has died unexpectedly at age 68. 

The cause of the veteran Democratic lawmaker’s death, which was announced on his Facebook page Tuesday night, was not disclosed. It comes only weeks after he underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth on his kidney, a procedure from which aides said he was expected to make a fully recovery. 

Whelan (D-Atlantic) was set to retire in January after his third term in the Senate came to an end.
