Shoplifter drowns after jumping in lake to avoid Wawa theft rap

When officers attempted to talk to him, the man ran from officers and he entered the water behind the Carriage House Apartments on Evergreen Avenue.

According to police, he refused commands to leave the water and swam under the Evergreen Avenue bridge, causing officers to lose sight of him.

The Woodbury Fire Company boat was called in but rescue workers were unable to find the man.

According to the GCPO, a dive team from the New Jersey State Police recovered his body around 10:30 a.m.

An autopsy conducted today by the Gloucester County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was accidental drowning.
