Jewish group takes town to court over boundary ban

MAHWAH — An Orthodox Jewish group has sued Mahwah over the township’s stance on religious boundaries put up on utility poles, according to a report. 

The federal lawsuit, filed by the Bergen Rockland Eruv Association and two Rockland County residents on Friday, accuses the town of fanning the flames of xenophobia in ordering the removal of “lechis,” which are PWC pipes attached to poles creating an eruv in the town, NorthJersey.com reports. 

An eruv designates an area where Jews can engage in activities typically forbidden on the sabbath in Jewish tradition.
