Art or gang sign? Sculpture being moved amid concerns

TRENTON — A sculpture seen by some as an OK sign and others as a gang gesture is being taken down and moved amid concerns that it could send the wrong message to residents.

The sculpture called “Helping Hands” was installed Tuesday on a vacant city-owned lot at the corner of Perry and Montgomery streets. It was designed and built by 16 kids from Homefront’s summer camp and artist Eric Schultz.

Isles, Inc., the nonprofit that works to revitalize neighborhoods, helped select the piece’s location as part of its efforts to re-activate spaces across the city.
