Hall of Fame coach cited after accident leaves pedestrian critical

WAYNE – A longtime cross-country coach at Clifton High School was ticketed by police Wednesday after an accident left a 62-year-old man in critical condition, authorities said.

John Pontes, 58, of Clifton, was driving a Ford Econoline van shortly before 11 a.m. when he struck Ryszard Mieliczek of Passaic, who was crossing the street, according to Wayne police.

Pontes was turning onto Valley Road from Runnymede Drive when he struck Mieliczek, who was crossing Valley Road from Nellis Drive to Runnymede Drive, according to Wayne police.
