Police chief threatens to sue over civilian oversight committee

NEPTUNE TOWNSHIP — The Neptune police chief is threatening to sue the township over the formation of a new police committee it deems “unlawful.”

Vito Gagliardi, an attorney for the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police who is representing police Chief James Hunt, says an ordinance adopted by the Neptune Township committee calls for a separate police committee that could potentially include an officer under him in the department.

“It’s untenable and unlawful to have the chief responding to a subordinate,” Gagliardi said.

He said the ordinance “seeks specifically to inject politics in the powerful machinery of law enforcement.”
