What feds want to do with Rutgers suicide prevention hotline for veterans

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon would have to resume support for Rutgers University’s suicide-prevention hotline for veterans under House-passed legislation setting defense policy for the 12 months beginning Oct. 1.

The National Defense Authorization Act would require Defense Department officials to show Congress how they can provide the same services elsewhere if they wanted to drop Vets4Warriors.

“The Vets4Warriors program has saved lives in New Jersey,” said Rep. Leonard Lance (R-7th Dist.), who won approval of an amendment to save the program. “The peer support for our servicemen and women offers a friendly ear at a time when it matters most.”
