Princeton student sentenced to prison in Iran is no spy, adviser says

PRINCETON — The graduate student at Princeton University who has been sentenced to 10 years in Iran on charges he was spying for the United States is innocent, his thesis adviser at the Ivy League school said Monday.

Chinese-American student Xiyue Wang has been accused of archiving thousands of Iranian documents and having connections with American intelligence agencies. 

In an email to NJ Advance Media, Princeton professor Stephen Kotkin said the documents Wang read and collected are more than 100 years old.

“He is innocent of the charges of espionage,” Kotkin said.
