Sam Guzzi, the driving force behind prosecution of suspected serial killer Robert Zarinsky, dead at 90

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS — The former Atlantic Highlands police chief whose dogged pursuit of suspected serial killer Robert Zarinsky paved the way for the prosecution in New Jersey of alleged murderers whose victims have never been found has died.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced the death Friday of Sam Guzzi, who rose through the ranks of the Atlantic Highlands Police Department before retiring as chief in 1987.

He was 90.

An agent with the prosecutor’s office for 18 years, Guzzi was hailed as a man whose relentless pursuit of justice prevented the sadistic slayings of young women at the hands of one of New Jersey’s most notorious killers.
