After killing of 11-year-old girl, an N.J. community searches for answers

KEANSBURG — When Dawn Stephens heard about the killing of an 11-year-old borough girl, she almost collapsed.

As Stephens and hundreds of friends, acquaintances and even strangers visited a makeshift memorial or attended a candlelight vigil Friday for the slain girl, emanating from their pain and sorrow was one question: Why?

“I was at a loss of words; I couldn’t even breathe,” Stephens, a 36-year-old nursing assistant, said of learning of the death of AbbieGail “Abbie” Smith, who was found stabbed to death Thursday behind the apartment she lived in with her mother.
