After 39 years, newsroom veteran gets an offer she couldn't refuse | Bob Shryock column

Jane Humes, the do-everything lady who really runs the Times newsroom, retires from the newspaper today after logging 39 years. Hired Dec. 1, 1978, Jane had an even-handed way about her in her dealings with a public that can be demanding with its plethora of phone calls rendering a few cranky at best.
