Gas leak prompts evacuations at apartment complex

SALEM — Several buildings at a Salem apartment complex were evacuated after a gas line was broken Thursday morning, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to the Harvest Point apartment complex on Grieves Parkway on Salem’s east side shortly after 8:30 a.m.

Initial reports were that a landscaper’s mower struck an outside gas line at the “R” Building.

Residents from that building and at least three others were evacuated by officials as a precaution.

Those living in houses nearby were also notified of the problem.

South Jersey Gas Co. had been notified and company workers arrived on the scene shortly after 9 a.m., officials said.
