Sweet news: First Jersey corn of the season has arrived

CARNEYS POINT TWP. — Used to be that farmers were worried they wouldn’t have a crop of sweet corn ready for market for the July 4 holiday.

Fred DePalma doesn’t have that problem. He’s been pulling corn, an early supersweet variety, since June 3.

“I just enjoy raising corn,” said DePalma as he walked along the rows of stalks early Saturday morning. He carefully felt each ear to be sure it was fully developed before pulling it.

Despite the cool, rainy spring this is the earliest that DePalma has begun harvesting his crop of white corn, the variety now preferred by consumers.
