Staten Island man charged with trying to kill clerk he allegedly robbed

FREEHOLD — A suspect in a Long Branch convenience store robbery has been indicted on charges he tried to kill the clerk he allegedly beat.

A grand jury in Monmouth County returned the six-count indictment on Tuesday against Shawn Caughey, 26, of Staten Island, in connection with the incident.

Authorities said at the time Caughey, who had been staying in Long Branch, robbed the 7-Eleven convenience store on Ocean Boulevard on Feb. 26.

Caughey is accused of hitting the clerk in the head and robbing him.

Caughey was arrested less than a day later.
