Kean U. student fatally shot last year receives posthumous degree

UNION — In his senior year at Kean University, Marcus Corey Ellis was going to prepare to become a history teacher, mentor transfer students and keep working at his two off-campus jobs.

That plan was destroyed last summer when Ellis was fatally shot in Plainfield on his way to a store, becoming the city’s eighth homicide of the year.

But Ellis, 25, still graduated from Kean with a history major and a social studies education certification. His youngest brother, Christion Ellis, accepted his degree Thursday morning at the university’s annual commencement ceremony.
