PHOTOS: Sussex County Community College sends off the Class of 2017

NEWTON — Nearly 500 graduates were honored Wednesday at Sussex County Community College.

Unusually humid conditions did not dissuade enthusiasm during the ceremony, held under a tent on the college’s main lawn.

Amelia Macchietto, graduating with an associate’s degree in liberal arts, offered an optimistic flourish during her remarks from the stage.

“We are about to change the world,” said Macchietto, chosen as the student spokesperson at the 6 p.m. commencement.

The college’s president, Jon Connolly, presented degrees and certificates and introduced the keynote speaker, Bloomfield College President Richard Levao.

Lorraine Parker, chair of the college’s trustee board, alluded to challenges overcome in her speech.
