Mountain Creek reportedly files for bankruptcy, mayor says he's not surprised

VERNON — The owner of Mountain Creek has filed for bankruptcy, the New Jersey Herald reported.

The filing, in federal court on Monday, is not expected to affect the daily operations of the resort best known for skiing and a waterpark.

Mountain Creek is seeking to restructure the resort’s debt, including $26 million in sewer payments to the township’s Municipal Utilities Authority, the newspaper reported.

Vernon Mayor Harry Shortway told NJ Advance Media the township will retain a bankruptcy attorney to protect its interests.

Shortway, asked about the bankruptcy filing on Tuesday, said, “It’s not a surprise to me.”
