East Coast surfing legend, N.J. native dies in Fla., reports say

Dick Catri, a pioneering surfer who was involved in all aspects of the sport and its culture for his entire life, died Monday at his Florida home.

Several news outlets and surfing sites reported Catri’s death Monday as being related to several strokes he’d suffered recently. He was born in Carteret in 1938, and was raised in Miami.

Surfline.com hailed Catri as, “one of the most iconic, ubiquitous and respected pioneers of East Coast surfing.”

He was often referred to as “the Godfather of East Coast surfing,” and was a member of the East Coast and International surfing hall of fames.
