Family of man killed by police gets $180K lawsuit settlement, report says

GARFIELD — Five years after police killed a Garfield teenager who escaped their custody, the family has settled a federal lawsuit for $180,000, according to NorthJersey.com

Malik Williams, 19, was shot and killed by Garfield police officers on Dec. 10, 2012 after he escaped police headquarters and hid in a nearby garage. Police forced their way into the garage and later said they shot Williams when he threatened them with tools.

A Bergen County Grand Jury cleared the officers in 2012.
