Bunny-suited prankster pleads guilty while cop heads to trial on assault charge

SPARTA — The Hopatcong police officer who slapped a bunny-suited, airhorn-toting prankster last fall is going to trial in July.

A key witness against Officer Nicholas Maresca Jr. will be Kevin Hemmerich, his alleged victim, who pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct Thursday and was fined $500 for his role in a widely-publicized caper caught on video.

Hemmerich and Maresca, who is charged with simple assault and harassment, were in municipal court for separate appearances before Judge John E. Mulhern.
