New Brunswick switches to license plate scanners for parking permits

NEW BRUNSWICK — New Jersey’s hub city will soon switch to digital parking permits using license plate scanners. 

After June 1, you will no longer see hang tags or decals on parked cars throughout the residential neighborhoods surrounding one of Rutgers University’s main campuses.

New Brunswick’s parking authority will scan license plates to check if cars have valid digital permit programs registered. Permits can be purchased starting May 1. 

The digital is move is the latest in the city’s shift to technology-based services. Last year, New Brunswick rolled out ParkMobile for its meters, allow drivers to park and pay using their smartphones.
